Establishment
The Global Open University, Nagaland (A State University
established by the Government of Nagaland) has been
legislated by the Nagaland State Legislative Assembly under
The Global Open University Act 2006 (Act 3 of 2006) which
received the assent of the Governor of Nagaland on 30th
August 2006 and was notified vide Notification number
Law/Act-10/2006 on 18th September 2006. The provisions of
The Global Open University Act 2006 were published in the
Nagaland Official Gazette on 18th September 2006 for general
information.
Recognition by the
University Grants Commission, MHRD, Government of India
The Global Open University
Nagaland is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC),
Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
The Global Open University, Nagaland is empowered to award
degrees as defined under Section 22 of the UGC Act 1956.
Recognition by the Distance Education Council
The Distance Education Council, New Delhi has recognised The
Global Open University, Nagaland for one year vide letter
DEC/GOU/NGL/Recog/2008/8685 dated 2nd June 2008 issued by
the Director, DEC. The application for the renewal and
extension of recognition with strong recommendations of the
Government of Nagaland has already been made to the Distance
Education Council.
Campuses of the University
The Global Open University, Nagaland has established three
campuses with headquarters at Dimapur and with main campuses
at Wokha and Kohima.
Dimapur Campus : The Hon’ble Chief Minister of
Nagaland Mr. Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the Headquarters of the
University at Dimapur on the occasion of World Environment
Day, 5th June 2007 and allotted the Youth Hostel Complex of
the Government of Nagaland for running job oriented and
vocational courses at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral
levels. The University has already acquired 100 acres
(approx.) of land through the State Government for the
Headquarters and the City Campus at Dimapur.
Wokha Campus : The Hon’ble Minister for Higher
Education, Government of Nagaland, Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu
inaugurated Wokha Campus of the University on 29th May 2007.
The University is situated at Orchid Hills, Wokha with a
view to catering to the growing needs for conducting
distance education programmes for young boys and girls
besides the government employees. A Committee has been
constituted for locating land for its permanent campus at
Wokha under the existing land acquisition rules in Nagaland.
Kohima Campus : The Global Open University, Nagaland
is conducting different programmes from its Kohima Campus
situated at Pezielietsie Colony on High School Road. The
meetings of the Governing Council, the Executive Council and
other Bodies of The Global Open University are also held
periodically in this campus for designing a masterplan
paradigm for strengthening the cause of distance and virtual
education in India in general and Nagaland in particular.
The Global Open University, Nagaland has envisaged an action
plan for improving the quality of education in India. The
University is conducting more than 150 programmes with a
view to vocationalising the existing careers of the young
boys and girls aspiring to become job givers rather than job
seekers. The University has also planned to help other
universities by providing them the appropriate technologies
of instructional material preparation, development and
training for enabling them to serve in an optimum manner for
launching job oriented and employment centric courses in the
country.
